Educational Planners

After taking a placement test, prospective students will meet with an educational planner for entry-level advising. Educational planners can help students:

• Learn about WVC programs, procedures and policies such as graduation and major requirements, deadlines, and registration information
• Find the right resources to help solve problems
• Take the entry steps within an education program
• Develop a balanced class schedule
• Register online
• Evaluate transcripts
• Understand special requirements associated with professional and technical programs
• Select courses and provide general assistance for new and former students

Faculty Advisers

Once students reach full-time status, they are assigned a faculty adviser. Faculty advisers have a special expertise in a field of study such as science, business, music, etc.  All efforts are made to match students with advisers who can best help meet educational and career goals. Faculty advisers meet with students each quarter before registration to help them select appropriate classes and discuss long-range educational plans. Faculty advisers can help with:

• Registration for continuing students
• Course selection for graduation requirements
• Transfer information for in-state colleges and universities
• Prerequisites for required courses
• Proper assessment for academic success
• Career options and plans

Student Role 

Students should play an active role in making educational plans by:

• Reading the WVC catalog
• Asking your faculty adviser about degree and/or certificate requirements in your area of study
• Moving toward your goals
• Having all transcripts from other institutions evaluated by the WVC Admissions Office and noting which classes relate to the WVC certificate and/or degree
• Developing a student planer to include transcripts, test scores, degree requirements, checklists and planning sheets and bring it to all advising sessions
• Learning the entrance and special requirements to your potential transfer school.  Catalogs are available in the student development center
• Knowing deadlines and when advising sessions begin each quarter
• Setting quarterly appointments with your faculty adviser
• Asking questions when you are unsure by something.  Educational planners or faculty advisers are always willing to help.
