Fire Science Overview
The ATS degree program in fire science provides individuals interested in emergency services with entry-level training. The program includes classes in general education and technical studies and complies with the Washington State Firefighter One (FF1) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) standards. If you are already volunteering as a firefighter, the program offers the opportunity to continue your education and enhance your technical fire service skills.
Coursework includes operational hazardous materials, FF1, EMT, tactics, building construction, pumper operations and wildland firefighter classes.
The National Fire Academy's core curriculum of fire prevention, principles of emergency services, fire behavior and combustion, terrorism awareness, and fire protection systems is also part of this program.
Twelve elective credits are also required in the degree program, and we offer classes in pre-paramedic, advanced wildland firefighting, safety officer, inspections and codes, and fire service instructor as qualifying subjects.
The FF1 class is delivered at area fire stations and will be articulated into the program. A minimum of six and a maximum of 12 credits shall be earned via a work experience program that allows you to work at a local fire station as an emergency responder. A limited number of courses are also available through the distance learning program, using a live interactive television instruction system that is available at the Omak campus.
Upon completion of the degree program, you will be qualified for credentialing as a Washington State Firefighter One and EMT plus an NWCG Firefighter II. Add the NFA and academic core curriculum to the time spent as a responder, and your ability to secure a full-time position as a firefighter will be dramatically improved.
