FS 100 15 credits Firefighter One Through a combination of lecture and hands-on training, the student will learn how to perform the basic functions of structural firefighting in a safe and effective manner.
FS 101 3 credits Fire Prevention Introduction and overview of all fire-prevention functions, philosophies and programs and their relationships to fire-suppression efforts. The measures of success and effectiveness of various fire-prevention programs will be discussed. Includes the legal mandate for fire prevention, fire inspection, public education, public relations, plan review, fire codes and fire investigation.
FS 102 3 credits Principles of Emergency Services An introduction to the fundamental services provided to the public by emergency responders and emergency management officials. The responsibilities of Fire Departments, Emergency Medical Services and law enforcement agencies working together during local, state and national emergencies will be discussed.
FS 103 3 credits Fire Behavior and Combustion An overview of fire protection and various careers in related fields. Includes philosophy and history, loss analysis, organization and function of protection services, government, laws and regulations affecting the service, emergency nomenclature and protection functions, basic fire chemistry and physics, introduction to protection systems, and introduction to strategy and tactics.
FS 104 3 credits Fire Protection Systems Provides information relating to the features of design and operation of fire detection and alarm systems, heat and smoke control systems, special protection and sprinkler systems, water supply for fire protection, and portable fire extinguishers. Prerequisites: FS 102 or adviser signature; MATH 096 or appropriate assessment score.
FS 109 1 credit Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention A defensive driving course specifically for ambulance drivers. It covers legal issues, vehicle handling characteristics, adverse driving conditions and vehicle inspections. This class will provide the EMT with the intellectual skills necessary to safely drive emergency vehicles.
FS 110 4 credits Pumpers and Water System Hydraulics A study of fluid mechanics dealing with the mechanical properties of water at rest and in motion, its application to suppression operations and fire streams. Includes municipal and rural water supply operations, basic fire pump components, systems and operational skills. Prerequisites: fire department sponsorship.
FS 117 1 credit Hazardous Materials Awareness To provide the EMT with the basic skills necessary to safely and effectively respond to victims of an emergency involving the uncontrolled release of dangerous chemicals.
FS 120 1 credit National Incident Management System The NIMS represents a core set of doctrine, concepts, principles, terminology and organizational processes to enable effective, efficient and collaborative incident management at all levels of emergency response.
FS 129 .5 credit Fire Safety for Blue Card Provides the new wild-land fire camp employee, or those in need of an annual refresher, basic safety information and fire shelter deployment skills to allow them to work in low-risk areas while under close supervision.
FS 130 4 credits Wildland Firefighting Basics Provides the new wildland firefighter with basic FFT2 Red Card-qualifying skills to effectively and safely suppress wildfires while under close supervision.
FS 131 1 credit Squad Boss Designed to meet the training requirements for a squad boss on wildland fire assignments, using NWCG certified S-131 curriculum. Prerequisites: Completion of FS 130 Wildland Firefighting Basics and certification as FFT2.
FS 132 3 credits Single Resources and Engine Boss Designed to meet the needs of a crew boss and an engine boss on wildland fire assignments using NWCG certified S-230 and S-231 curricula. Prerequisites: completion of FS 131 Squad Boss and certification as FFT1.
FS 137 3 credits Fire Operations in the Wildland/Urban Interface Provides training for FFT2 Red Carded or above firefighters who require advanced tactical instruction prior to confronting wildland fire that threatens life, property and improvements in the interface. Prerequisite: FS 130 or FFT2 Red Card.
FS 152 3 credits Building Construction Overview of engineering principles by building construction, characteristics of building classifications, life and fire safety devices, fire assemblies, fire loading, fire resistance, and flame spread ratings. Covers the hazards of various methods, techniques, components and materials of building construction. Special attention to lightweight construction techniques.
FS 160 3 credits Tactics Includes the planning, implementation and evaluation of basic fire tactics at the responding officer level. Principal elements include prefire planning, size-up, fire simulation, fire behavior, organizational structures, tactics, strategy, resource requirements, proper allocation of resources and introduction to the Incident Command System. Prerequisites: FS 100.
FS 180 3 credits Hazardous Materials Operations Designed for individuals who respond to releases or potential releases of hazardous materials as part of an initial response for the purpose of protecting nearby persons, property or the environment from the effects of the release. Prerequisites: Firefighter One Certification or Hazardous Materials Awareness.
FS 190 1 credit Emergency Response to Terrorism: Basic Concepts This course will improve students’ ability to identify, safely respond to, and minimize the effects of an incident of terrorism involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive (CBRNE) agents. Prerequisites: Firefighter One Certification or Hazardous Materials Awareness.
FS 191 3 credits Inspections and Codes A study of the International Fire Code and related standards. Special attention is given to general provisions of the IFC maintenance of exit ways, fire protection, flammable and combustible liquids, liquefied petroleum gases, places of assembly, and general precautions against fires.
FS 194 2 credits Incident Safety Officer To provide the firefighter with skills to function effectively as the safety officer at fire department incident operations. The primary focus will be on developing decision-making skills through the recognition of cues that affect personal safety. Prerequisite: Firefighter One Certification.
FS 196/296 1-5 credits Work Experience Designed to provide students with on-the-job practical field experience. One credit for each five hours of work experience per week. Prerequisite: instructor’s signature.
