Math Placement

Which ASSET exam should you take?

When you come to Wells Hall 1011 to take ASSET, the proctor will ask some questions to help you determine which ASSET mathematics exam to take. (Running Start students take Intermediate Algebra.) If you would like to get a feeling ahead of time about which math placement exam to take, the following Quick Exams may refresh your memory about algebra and help you assess the level of your math skills. The WVC Mathematics Department created these Quick Exams and strongly recommends that you honestly work through these problems without the aid of a calculator. Your goal is to determine your skill level in math, so we discourage you from counting correct guesses in your total number of correct answers.

The following four exams start with a numerical skills exam and increase in difficulty until you reach the level appropriate for taking College Algebra. Each part of an exam has 10 questions. The first part of each exam requires you to work out the problem and compare your answer with the correct answer. A solution method is suggested for each question. The second part includes 10 multiple choice questions. Only the correct answers are provided for this part.

If you have eight or more correct answers for a particular test, we recommend that you move on to the next test. The scores are to help you take the right ASSET test and to get you placed into the appropriate level of mathematics courses. Students who are misplaced slow their progress toward a degree or certificate. Students placed in a class above their level may fail or withdraw and have to start again the following quarter in a lower-level course to achieve success. Students who are placed too low spend unnecessary time repeating material they already know. It is the strong recommendation of the WVC Mathematics Department that you be honest with yourself and enroll at the appropriate level, then work your way successfully through the math sequence.
