Writing Skills

Students who complete the writing skills requirement will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a familiarity with the writing process by producing a variety of original peer-reviewed essays, directed toward specific audiences’ needs, in a variety of contexts.
  • Compose focused, organized, well-developed, fluent, grammatically correct academic and/or professional writing.
  • Demonstrate research skills by conducting academic research, judging relevance and credibility of sources, and using primary and secondary sources.
  • Skillfully incorporate such research into the text of essays by paraphrasing or direct-quoting sources, citing sources, and adhering to appropriate citation format(s), including MLA, APA, Turabian, and CSE.
  • Exhibit critical thinking skills (analyze, synthesize, evaluate and apply, problem solve, reason quantitatively and qualitatively), in written compositions, oral responses and presentations, and analysis of texts.
