000.290 AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR POLICY

Wenatchee Valley College, upon acquisition of Automated External Defibrillator’s (AED’s), shall notify the local ambulance services as well as Chelan County Fire District #1 of the type of AED’s acquired, and their location.

Prior to purchasing the AED, the college shall provide the county medical program director with documentation that the college have a procedure in place to comply with the operational guidelines of the AED manufacturer.

The AED’s will be kept on school property and will not accompany emergency medical services personnel to a hospital emergency room.

The AED or defibrillator means a medical device, heart monitor and defibrillator that:

  1. Is capable of recognizing the presence of ventricular tachycardia (a rapid and irregular heartbeat), and is capable of determining without intervention by an operator, whether defibrillation should be performed; and
  2. Upon determining that defibrillation should be performed, automatically charges and prompts the operator to deliver an electrical impulse to an individual’s heart.

1000.290 AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) PROCEDURE

Under the direction of the Wenatchee Valley College Safety Committee and Human Resource Department, an employee may use the AED under the following circumstances:

  1. The employee has successfully completed and holds a current certification from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association or other training program recognized by the Department of Health in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of a defibrillator.
  2. The victim is in cardiopulmonary arrest as determined by unconsciousness, absent pulse and no spontaneous breathing.
  3. 911 is activated.
  4. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is performed until the AED is brought to the scene.WVC Human Resources Department is notified by the college administration of the use of the AED after the victim has been transferred to the care of emergency management system (EMS) personnel.
