WVC announces 2011 All-Washington Academic Team student winners

Wenatchee Valley College student Chelsea Stevens and WVC at Omak student Cynthia Hervin were recognized as members of the 2011 All-Washington Academic Team at a ceremony in Olympia on Thursday, March 24. They were presented a medallion by WVC President Jim Richardson and congratulated by Gov. Christine Gregoire.

The students each received a $750 All-Washington Academic Team scholarship.

Stevens carries a 3.76 GPA and plans to continue her education by completing a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science, communication and leadership at the University of Idaho. Stevens earned college credits through participation in College in the High School and Tech Prep before attending WVC full time. She was an active member in both 4-H and FFA and served as a local 4-H club leader while in college.

Hervin carries a 3.5 GPA and plans to pursue a health-related career with a goal of owning an herbal pharmacy. Hervin worked for 25 years in the insurance industry before making some career changes. She began working as an Upward Bound program assistant to help students prepare for college and decided to attend college herself. Hervin is a single mother of three grown children, the youngest of which is also currently attending Wenatchee Valley College at Omak.

The 2011 All-Washington Academic Team project represents 33 community and technical colleges in Washington state. The project is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, KeyBank of Washington, the Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA), the Washington State Employees Credit Union, the Washington Association of Community and Technical Colleges, the Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges, and the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.
