Wenatchee Valley College Mirror Northwest call for submissions

Wenatchee Valley College is seeking fiction, nonfiction, and artwork submissions for its literary journal, Mirror Northwest, through March 1, 2013.

Poetry, short fiction, essays, artwork and photographs may be submitted to MirrorNW@wvc.edu. The journal is only accepting electronic submissions at this time.

Manuscripts should be sent in .doc, .docx, .pdf, .txt or HTML format and may be subject to editing. Photographs should be in .jpeg/.jpg, RAW, .png or .bmp format. Digital images of artwork should be submitted in .jpeg/.jpg files saved at 300 dpi.

WVC English faculty member Jack Johnson is serving as adviser of the literary journal. Mirror Northwest was established in the 1970s and was resurrected by Johnson in 1997, and by WVC English faculty Derek Sheffield from 2004 to 2007.

Johnson said that Mirror Northwest will fulfill a creative need and provide a cultural experience, as well as get students involved across disciplines.

"We're involving as many students as possible," Johnson said, which includes editors and WVC students Emily Wooldridge, Evan Spitler, Jillian Danley, Tamara Graves and Donson Curtiss. The WVC Graphic Design students will create the cover art and layout of the publication under the direction of instructor David Hampton.

Wooldridge, a second-year Running Start student, has played a large part in the revival of Mirror Northwest, which was last published in 2007. Interested in both creative writing and journalism, and wanting to be part of a literary magazine or newspaper, she discussed with Johnson the possibility of creating a literary magazine, and he recommended re-starting Mirror Northwest.

Wooldridge encourages both WVC students and the community to submit work to Mirror Northwest. "Every person has a unique perspective; they have that unique voice that echoes through their writing," she said.

She expects that the journal will be a reflection of the community. "It will reveal something about this area—that we're artistic," she said.

The Associated Students of WVC approved funding for publication costs, as well as the WVC English Department.
