Wenatchee Valley College employees recognized

Outstanding faculty and staff members at Wenatchee Valley College were recognized by colleagues and the WVC Foundation at an awards ceremony on June 11.

Anne Gardner of Malaga, math faculty member, received the Linda Schultz Herzog Faculty Member of the Year Award, which includes a $1,500 honorarium funded by the WVC Foundation. Jenny Capelo of Cashmere, dean of allied health, received the WVC Exempt Staff Award with a $1,000 honorarium funded by the WVC Foundation. Roger Montanez of Omak, custodial supervisor at the WVC at Omak campus, received the WVC Alcoa Classified Staff Award and a $1,000 honorarium funded by Alcoa.

The Anna Pieratt Spirit of Wenatchee Valley College Award was presented to Suzie Benson of East Wenatchee, vice president of administrative services. This award honors an individual or group who has demonstrated the spirit exemplified by Anna Pieratt when she served as executive assistant to the president. Benson also received a 35-year service award.

Derek Sheffield of Leavenworth, English faculty member, was the recipient of the Alcoa Excellence in Teaching Award. Each year, faculty members are invited to submit proposals that will support an instructor in the development of a project that significantly increases learning effectiveness. A $1,500 award funded by Alcoa is given to a faculty member or team. Sheffield has arranged a visiting writers project, in which writers visit campus to give public readings and work with creative writing students.

Ten-year service awards were presented to Scott Bailey of East Wenatchee, art faculty member; Kevin Berg of Wenatchee, associate dean of student development and financial aid director; Marilyn Brincat of Wenatchee, allied health instructional support technician; Faviola Barbosa of East Wenatchee, multicultural affairs and student events coordinator; Jaima Kuhlmann of Wenatchee, lead educational planner; and Gloria McGregor of East Wenatchee, nursing faculty member.

Fifteen-year service awards were presented to Bob Gillespie of Wenatchee, agriculture faculty member, and Angie Redmon of Malaga, math faculty member.

Twenty-five year service awards were presented to Garrick Booth of Wenatchee, math faculty member; Ran Cho of East Wenatchee, fiscal analyst; Greg Franz of Wenatchee, athletic director and physical education faculty; Bruce Unger of Wenatchee, physics faculty; and Anne Gardner of Malaga, math faculty member.

Maureen Bryant, information technology specialist, and Mike Lavinder, math faculty, both from Wenatchee, received 30-year service awards.

College faculty and staff also recognized Blake Murray of Wenatchee, automotive technology program director and faculty, who is retiring this year. Murray has served at WVC since 1999 and is a WVC alumnus.

Remembrance speeches were given on behalf of Gerald Tomek, director of fiscal services, and Jim Steiner, retired construction management faculty member, who passed away this year.
