Campus Security Officer Thwarts Abduction Attempt

Wenatchee Valley College campus security officers help keep students and the community safe.

"We know having security walking the campus is valuable, but we don't often have such clear evidence," said Suzie Benson, vice president of administrative services.

WVC Campus Security Officer Kevin Edwards helped stop an attempted kidnapping last Saturday near the fountain on the Wenatchee campus.  His careful attention and quick action helped an 11-year-old girl escape harm.  Edwards also detained the suspect until police arrived.  For more about the incident, read the Wenatchee World article or view the KOMO 4 News video.

WVC contracts with CWI Security, Inc. of Yakima to provide 24-hour, seven-day-a-week security services on the Wenatchee campus. At least one guard is on duty at all times.  Additional guards patrol during peak hours and events.

As winter quarter nears, college administrators remind students to be smart about safety and recommend these tips for walking on campus at night:

• Walk in pairs or groups if possible.
• Stay focused (avoid earphones, texting, etc.).
• Always plan your routes with safety in mind.
• Travel in well-lit areas.
• Always scan your environment, stay alert and tuned into your surroundings.
• Walk with confidence.
