Knights fastpitch earns awards and ninth consecutive Eastern Region title

WVC Knights fastpitch celebrated their ninth consecutive year as Eastern Region Champions in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC). The Knights returned to the NWAACC Tournament in Portland, Ore., where they placed fourth.

Several players received honors and awards at the end of their season.

Those named to the Eastern Region All-Stars First Team include Liz Crookes, pitcher; Melanie Swanson, catcher; infielders Haley Hess, Iris Rodriguez and Becky Wall; Ashley Wilkey, outfielder; and Julia Rambo, utility. Players named to the All-Stars Second Team include Kinley Pope, infielder; Ashleigh Lynch, outfielder; and Sidney Hazen, DH/DP.

Five of the Knights sophomores qualified for the NWAACC Academic Leadership Award and will continue their education: Kinley Pope, Carroll College; Julia Rambo, College of Idaho; Melanie Swanson, Central Washington University; Dani Swiegard, University of Colorado; and Becky Wall, WVC Nursing Program. The following sophomores are also continuing to four-year schools: Haley Hess will attend Eastern Oregon University, and Marie Beagle will go to Central Washington University.

In addition, five fastpitch players were named to the NWAACC All-Academic Sports Team for spring quarter: Kinley Pope, Julia Rambo, Melanie Swanson, Dani Swiegard and Becky Wall.

Coach Shelly Pflugrath was named 2014 NWAACC Eastern Region Coach of the Year, her sixth award since she began her coaching at WVC.
