Wenatchee Valley College at Omak presents 11th Annual Omak Film Festival

Wenatchee Valley College at Omak student government has partnered with the Omak and Mirage Theaters to present the 11th Annual Omak Film Festival from Feb. 28 to April 3. The films being featured at the include 12 Years a Slave, Nebraska, Her, August: Osage County, and The Rocket. Each film plays nightly at 6:30 p.m. for one week, with matinees at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The goal of the partnership is to bring films that would not make it to the Okanogan—films that are riveting, captivating, educational and entertaining, said Livia Millard, WVC at Omak multicultural coordinator.

12 Years a Slave (R) will play Feb. 28 to March 6. The film has received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Chiwetelu Ejiofor, Best Supporting Actor for Michael Fassbender and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o. The film is based on a book by Solomon Northrup and his experience as a free black man captured and sold into slavery.

Nebraska (R) plays from March 7 to 13. The film features Bruce Dern, Will Forte and June Squibb. Nebraska has been nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Dern, Best Supporting Actress for Squib and Best Original Screenplay.

Her (R) plays March 14 to 20. This film has also been nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Writing-Original Screenplay. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wild and Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha.

August: Osage County (R) features Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. Streep has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and Roberts for Best Supporting Actress. This film plays March 21 to 27.

The Rocket (unrated) plays March 28 to April 3. This is an Australian foreign film nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. The Rocket features Sitthiphon Disamoe as a boy who is believed to bring bad luck to those around him, yet leads his family and friends through Laos to find a new home.

Admission is $8.50 for adults and $6 for children under 11. Discount matinees are $6 for all ages. WVC at Omak students with current student ID will be admitted free with one guest to these films.
