WVC alumna Jenaesha Iwaasa gives cello recital at WVC Jan. 8

Wenatchee Valley College alumna Jenaesha Iwaasa will give a cello recital on Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 12 to 1 p.m. in The Grove Recital Hall in the Music and Art Center on the Wenatchee campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Iwaasa will perform "Concerto No. 1 in A minor Op. 33" by Saint-Saëns, A "Suite of Variations on Medieval Melodies for Unaccompanied Violoncello" by Donald Martino and selections from the Third Bach Cello Suite.

A question-and-answer session will take place after the performance for those students who are interested in transferring to university programs to complete their music degrees.

Iwaasa completed her transfer degree at WVC and is studying at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas, with cellist Norman Fischer. She has played the cello since she was eight years old, taking lessons from local music instructors Kara Hunnicutt and Sally Singer Tuttle, as well as Craig Weaver from the Twisp/Methow area and Kevin Krentz from Seattle.

At twelve years old, Iwaasa was asked by an instructor whether she had considered playing the cello as a career. Iwaasa has taught piano and cello lessons herself, but she's keeping her career options open. "I'm ready for whatever opportunities are available," she said. "I'm happy to see where going to Rice takes me."
