The Wenatchee Valley College Foundation will host a Woods Piano Trio concert at The Grove Recital Hall, Music and Art Center, on Sunday, February 23, at 4 p.m. on the Wenatchee campus. The MAC Gallery will also be open for guests to enjoy the current installation by WVC Art Director Scott Bailey prior to the concert.
The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are encouraged and will be directed to the WVC Foundation Excellence in Music Scholarship Fund.
Established in 2012, the Excellence in Music Scholarship Fund provides financial support WVC students who plan to pursue a four-year degree in music performance. Private lessons cost WVC students approximately $300 a quarter in addition to their tuition and fees. The scholarship fund will help offset these expenses by assisting with the cost of private music lessons.
Performing as the Woods Piano Trio are Ken Hunnicutt, Gretchen Woods and Kara Woods Hunnicutt. Ken Hunnicutt performs regularly as an accompanist and chamber musician throughout North Central Washington. He teaches at Wenatchee Valley College and is a member of the Washington State Music Teachers Association. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a master's degree in piano performance and accompanying.
Gretchen Woods is a graduate summa cum laude of Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. She recently completed four years as concertmaster of the Mid-Columbia Symphony and is a former member of the Toledo (Ohio) Symphony. Gretchen performs in the Wenatchee Valley Symphony, and she has played in other ensembles large and small including the Yakima and Walla Walla symphonies, Michigan Opera Theater and Northwest Chamber Orchestra.
Kara Woods Hunnicutt, cellist and teacher in central Washington, has been principal cellist of the Yakima Symphony since 1990. She is the conductor of the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony in Wenatchee and Leavenworth and principal cello with the Wenatchee Valley Symphony. She has been a featured soloist with seven orchestras in the Northwest, performing concertos by Dvorak, Schumann, Bloch, Lalo, Saint-Saëns and Haydn. She has also had a cello concerto written for her by Dr. Gwyneth Walker and performed with the Mid Columbia Symphony in 2007. Hunnicutt attended Oberlin Conservatory and later earned a bachelor and master of music degree from the University of Southern California.
