Northwest Nature Writing now offered during spring quarter at WVC

Wenatchee Valley College's popular summer course is now offered in the spring. Join English faculty Derek Sheffield and biology faculty Dr. Dan Stephens for Northwest Nature Writing, a learning community that integrates a biology course with writing.

Springtime offers more diversity in the ecology, Sheffield explained. "Our students will be able to witness more stages of plant development," he said. "In the summer, many of the wildflowers we find are blooming or past-bloom. In the spring, students will be able to see plants in more stages: pre-bloom, bloom, seed."

Students will focus on various aspects of nature writing while in the field, learning the names and ecology of a number of plant and animal species that will also provide the basis for writing assignments. The aesthetic and spiritual aspects of nature will be discussed and written about.

This learning community combines a five-credit Biology 127 Northwest Environments course with a five-credit English 135 Creative Writing course. Students must enroll in both courses for a total of 10 credits.

The class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 5 p.m., with three Saturday field trips from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Spring quarter starts March 30.
