High School 21+ pilot courses begin fall quarter at WVC

Wenatchee Valley College Transitional Studies will begin offering students a new alternative to receive a secondary-level credential in the fall of 2015. Through High School 21+ (HS21+), students earn a high school diploma issued by WVC by completing credit requirements through adult basic education (ABE) classes.

HS21+ is a Washington State initiative offered at many technical and community colleges throughout the state in response to the 2014 revision of the GED® tests. Students who had not previously completed all tests under the old GED® format had to start over with the new series of tests. The tests also increased in cost and difficulty, and there are currently few ways to determine whether a student is prepared to successfully complete the tests.

"This creates a very vague pathway with little sense of progress for most students and a single pass/fail event as the only real measurement of success," said Aaron Parrott, WVC Transitional Studies Director. "The sense of frustration is high, and it's a huge challenge to motivate students to stay in the program."

HS21+ is available for any student 21 years or older. Students who are near their 21st birthday may begin work now to start accruing credit. Students do not have to have prior high school credit; however, previous high school credit and learning or professional experience may be considered for high school credit.

To earn their diploma, students will need to earn credits in English, math, history, science, health, fitness, occupational education, art and electives. They will complete projects and assignments designed to prove competency in these required subjects. Many of the courses are self-paced, and there are a variety of ways for students to complete assignments and prove their abilities in each area. They may also work in pairs or with groups of other students who are seeking credit in similar subject areas.

In addition to earning credit toward a high school diploma, students will learn skills to prepare them for college-level courses and to enter the workforce.

HS21+ does not replace the GED® tests. For some students, the GED® may be a faster option to a high school equivalency; however, students with a GED® certificate may choose to complete HS21+ to obtain a high school diploma as well.

"If a student almost completed the GED® before the test system changed, this would be a great opportunity to come back without having to start over," said Parrott. "Students will be able to track their progress toward their goals, and will have a much better sense of when they will earn their diplomas and complete the program. With the GED program, we can't answer the very frequently asked question, 'how long will it take me to finish?' With High School 21+, we can make a complete academic plan for each student, with a realistic date for completion."

To enroll in adult basic education classes, students must first attend an orientation that includes screening, testing, advising and registration. Orientations are available prior to the start of each quarter. Call WVC Transitional Studies at 509.682.6790 to reserve a space. Fall quarter 2015 begins Monday, Sept. 21.

Students will pay the adult basic education tuition rate of $25 and a $10 material fee.

The HS21+ program will be fully implemented on the Wenatchee and Omak campuses in winter quarter 2016.

El Departamento de Estudios Transitorios de Wenatchee Valley College comenzará a ofrecer a estudiantes una nueva alternativa para recibir una credencial de nivel preparatoria en el otoño del 2015. A través de Escuela Preparatoria 21+ (HS21+), estudiantes podrán obtener un diploma de preparatoria emitido por WVC al completar los requisitos de crédito a través de clases de educación básica para adultos (ABE).

HS21+ es una iniciativa del Estado de Washington que se ofrece en muchos colegios técnicos y comunitarios en todo el estado, en respuesta a la revisión 2014 de los exámenes GED®. Los estudiantes que no habían completado previamente todos los exámenes bajo el formato antiguo GED® tuvieron que empezar de nuevo con la nueva serie de exámenes. HS21+ no pretende sustituir los exámenes GED®. Para algunos estudiantes, el GED® puede ser una opción más rápida a una equivalencia de escuela preparatoria; Sin embargo, los estudiantes con un certificado GED® pueden optar por completar HS21+ para obtener un diploma de escuela preparatoria también.
