WVC Speaks Lecture Series presents “High-Risk, High-Reward Youth” June 1

Alex Taub, WVC anthropology facultyIn the final WVC Speaks Lecture Series presentation, WVC anthropology faculty Alex A.G. Taub will present “High-Risk, High-Reward Youth” on Thursday, June 1, at 2 p.m. in Wenatchi Hall 2105 and in Omak campus room 901 via ITV.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

At-risk and high-risk youth are often written off as difficult to work with or a waste of effort and money. However, by investing in them, we also invest in our own society. We can benefit and be more effective when we learn to see these youth as potential friends and colleagues rather than a drain on public resources. Services aimed at these challenging youth are not just ethical expectations of our society, but also significant investments for the general social good. These youths can teach us lessons about how to be effective and respectful when working with them and others who may have different perspectives, cultures, backgrounds and needs.

Taub has worked with high-risk youth for almost 30 years. His experience started in elementary classrooms and youth outreach, moved to juvenile detention and is now focused on social work and young adult education. He has integrated these varied experiences into a developing understanding of how youth served by these social agencies feel about and are affected by the efforts of these programs.

Daily parking passes on the Wenatchee campus cost $2. Parking permit machines are available in the Wells Hall/Music and Art Center, Smith Gym, Brown Library and Sexton Hall lots. Students must have valid WVC parking permits.
