Wenatchee Valley College will offer Drawn to Geology, a new learning community that combines geology and art, during fall quarter 2016.

Drawn to Geology is a 10-credit course that combines ART& 110 Drawing 1 with GEOL& 101 Introduction to Physical Geology. No drawing experience is necessary.

This learning community will form an invaluable bridge to understanding complicated concepts within art and geology, and uniting the two fields will provide students with a much deeper understanding of both. Observation and visualization are fundamental to both fields. Classroom and online work will help develop skills, and field trips will allow students to apply those skills using landscapes and outcrops. During the field experience, students will complete a geology and drawing notebook, and collect rocks and fossils to use in classroom drawings and projects. The integration of these subjects will help students develop drawing skills while learning about local and regional geology.

The course is taught by Marlin Peterson, illustration and drawing instructor, and Kelsay Stanton, geology instructor.

Drawn to Geology meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m., with a few Saturday courses and some online assignments.

Fall quarter starts Monday, Sept. 19.
