WVC instructor Alex Taub releases first book

In celebration of the release of his first book “Working with High Risk Youth: The Case of Curtis Jones,” Alex A. G. Taub, part-time anthropology faculty member at Wenatchee Valley College, will be signing copies at a Book for All Seasons in Leavenworth Sunday, August 14,from 1-3 p.m.

More than 15 years in the making, the book offers practical guidance in working with high-risk youth, common problems encountered and tools to deal with many difficult situations. Though written as a college textbook, it’s not typical.

“This is a hands-on, direct application book; it’s not theoretical,” said Taub. “It’s interesting, useful, applicable and affordable. It’s for anyone looking for tools to work with this population.”

Each chapter begins with an interview or narrative written from the perspective of a high-risk youth, is followed by an explanation of how a youth worker and the service they provide is perceived by the client, and includes suggested approaches to control situations. The book was reviewed by professionals in the field and current and former gang members to insure a more accurate portrayal of the challenging work environment of youth social services providers.

Taub has more than twenty years of experience working with high-risk youths. In addition to his work as a college instructor, he has worked as a youth counselor, juvenile detention counselor, Child Protective Services worker and volunteer for youth programs.
