Story of Harriet Tubman part of Martin Luther King Day celebration

Performers Karol and James Brown will present “An Evening with Harriet Tubman” at the Performing Arts Center of Wenatchee on Monday, Jan.19, at 7 p.m. Karol Brown portrays the 92-year-old Harriet Tubman while James Brown plays caretaker Brother Ely. The show is part of the Martin Luther King Day celebration hosted by the City of Wenatchee Diversity Advisory Council. Admission is by donation.

 

Karol and James Brown of Tacoma make up the Brown Tones Storytellers. Karol Brown has been researching the life of Harriet Tubman and others involved in the Underground Railroad for more than 10 years. James Brown uses his tenor voice and the sounds of Negro Spirituals to tell his stories. He is frequently featured in his church choir.

 

The Browns belong to several performance organizations including Arts Northwest, Tacoma's Fireside Storytellers League, Seattle Storytellers, Guild National Storytelling Network, the National Association of Black Storytellers, Inc., and Toastmasters International. The Browns joined the storytelling community in 1999 after receiving the first of their three contracts with the Washington State Commission on Humanities’ Inquiring Mind Speakers Bureau.
