Derek Sheffield will give poetry reading at Burning Word poetry festival in Leavenworth

Poet Derek Sheffield, an English professor at Wenatchee Valley College, will be one of the poets featured at the Burning Word poetry performance festival at the Icicle Creek Music Center in Leavenworth on May 21.

Sheffield’s poetry reading will be part of the Floating Bridge Press exhibit in Canyon Wren Concert Hall from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Sheffield teaches creative writing, poetry, and literature courses at WVC and is coordinator of the Visiting Writers Program at WVC. His chapbook, A Revised Account of the West (2008), won the inaugural Hazel Lipa Chapbook Award sponsored by Flyaway at Iowa State University, and his poetry has appeared in literary magazines and journals such as Poetry, The Georgia Review, Orion, Ecotone, Poet Lore, Poetry Northwest, and Terrain.org, among others.

Burning Word includes a master class taught by Sam Hamill and Paul Nelson; an open mic stage; poetry workshops; small group recital rounds; an exhibitor gallery featuring small presses; MFA programs and other groups of interest to poets; a bookstore and bookswap, and food concessions. The festival culminates in a Fire & Ice Evening Show from 7-9:30 p.m. featuring Oliver de la Paz, Judith Skillman, Christopher Howell, Jed Myers, John Burgess, Ted McMahon, Melet Whinston, Judith Roche, Paul Nelson, Tara Hardy, and Sam Hamill.

General admission for the festival on Saturday, May 21, is $14 in advance and $18 at the gate and includes admission to the Main Stage and open mic events, the Fire & Ice Evening Show, and admission to the bookstore and book-swap yurt. Admission to the Fire & Ice Evening Show only is $12.
