WVC CAMP program receives grant for 2015-17

The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at Wenatchee Valley College received a Supplemental CAMP grant totaling $7,142 for 2015-17 from the Washington State Achievement Council.

The grant supports the annual CAMP consortium, where students train in leadership and networking. The Washington State CAMP Consortium, formerly the Northwest Consortium, allows students to engage in leadership and team-building activities, as well as interact with one another. WVC hosted the consortium last year at the Wenatchee Convention Center. The 2016 Northwest Consortium will take place at the University of Washington.

In addition to the annual consortium, WVC CAMP will use the grant funds to provide scholars the opportunity to visit a variety of universities. These trips are essential for many of the students who have been underexposed to higher education options and allow them to picture themselves in a university environment.

The Supplemental CAMP grant program, which originated in 2001, provides funding to institutions for direct student services to attract and retain students from among the migrant and seasonal farm worker population. The Supplemental Grant for CAMP supports recruitment and enhances retention of first-generation students in higher education.

The WVC CAMP program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Migrant Education, provides services such as college orientation, study skills instruction, tutoring, one-on-one advising, mentoring and financial assistance. Each year, the WVC CAMP program serves 60 first-year students. The program has served 369 students since it was established at WVC in 2009.
