WVC Foundation to bestow awards at Piatigorsky Concert May 2

The WVC Foundation will present two individuals with the Harvey Award and the Outstanding Friend of the College Award on May 2 during the Piatigorsky Foundation Concert at the WVC Music and Art Center.

Carol Danielson will be presented with the Harvey Award for her years of service on the WVC Foundation Board of Directors and her continued service on the Foundation development and membership committees. Danielson served on the Foundation board from 2006-2013. During her time as a board member, she actively participated in the planning of fundraising events such as Winetasia, the Foundation's signature fundraising event, and the Music and Art Center capital campaign. She was also active on the membership committee. Always present at Foundation and college events, Danielson has been a vocal advocate of the college. Though she no longer serves on the board, Danielson still participates on the development and membership committees as a community volunteer.

Theodore "Ted" Zacher, WVC alumnus from the class of 1942, will be honored with the Outstanding Friend of the College Award for his selfless and significant financial support.

Zacher attended the college when it was known as Wenatchee Junior College and was housed in a wing of Wenatchee High School. He was a member of the six-person basketball team, which was transported to games by college president W.B. Smith. After graduating from WJC, Zacher transferred to the University of Washington and graduated with degrees in economics and business. In 1943, Zacher graduated again, this time through a military program at Harvard. He served in the Navy for a few years, and then returned home to work in his father's orchard and later for Wenoka Growers, where he worked for 36 years.

In the fall of 2013, Zacher transferred almost 55,000 shares of stock to the WVC Foundation, resulting in a gift of more than $400,000. When asked how he wanted the gift used, Zacher said "Use it where you need it the most."

"Many students aren't ready to leave and head to a four-year school right out of high-school," he said. "I was glad to have an opportunity to live at home and have the opportunity to attend Wenatchee Valley Junior College before leaving Dryden to head to the big city."

The Piatigorsky Foundation Concert takes place at 6 p.m. in The Grove Recital Hall in the WVC Music and Art Center, with a pre-concert reception at 5 p.m. The one-hour intimate concert features two artists, soprano Katharine Dain and pianist Jeffery Grossman. Through their musical performance and comprehensive commentaries, guests will gain an unparalleled understanding of the classical music pieces and composers. The concert is free and open to the public.
