Alumni Spotlight: Alejandra Hernandez '18,'19

Alejandra Hernandez

Alejandra Hernandez never planned to stay in one lane. Her career has taken unexpected turns, each shaped by her determination, adaptability, and a deep commitment to helping others. From earning two degrees at Wenatchee Valley College to working in healthcare and education, she’s proved that growth comes from embracing change.

As a first-generation college student with a disability, she knew she needed an affordable path that allowed her to work full-time while earning her degree. She found that and more. While in the Medical Assistant program, she served as secretary for the Medical Assistant Student Knights (MASK) club and was chosen to speak at her pinning ceremony. “For me to have completed the program despite people questioning if I should pursue it or not due to my physical disability. It was a moment I will never forget,” she said.

After four years as a Certified Medical Assistant, working in departments like Neuro Rehab Physiatry and Endocrinology, Alejandra felt a calling to education. She’s now back at WVC, this time as a Program Assistant for the Transitional Studies department, where she helps students build their English language skills and pursue new opportunities. “It’s truly rewarding to witness students progress in their language skills and pursue careers they never thought were possible,” she shared.

Between working full-time, raising a five-month-old son, and completing her bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Alejandra also dedicates time to advocacy. She’s spoken on panels about disability inclusion in outdoor spaces and participated in research on improving pregnancy healthcare for black and latina/x individuals with disabilities.

Alejandra’s advice for current WVC students is clear. “You no longer have to stay in one career for the rest of your life. You have the power to keep learning, evolving, and expanding. Don’t let others dictate your path. The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it from you."
